What Makes A Bag A Gift Rather Than A Purchase

Short answer

A bag becomes a gift when it looks like a decision someone made rather than something taken off a shelf. In practice that comes down to four things: it has to be visibly not mass-produced, it has to arrive presentable without wrapping, it has to be safe to give without knowing a size, and it has to give the giver something to say. Handmade bags satisfy the first and the last almost by definition — the other two are decisions you make when you place the order.

Gift buyers are a different customer

Someone buying for themselves is weighing the bag against bags. Someone buying a gift is weighing it against the risk of getting it wrong. That changes the whole shape of the decision: price matters less, appearance of thoughtfulness matters more, and the deadline is immovable. It also means gift purchases cluster into a few weeks and then stop, which is a stock planning problem rather than a marketing one.

The practical consequence for a buyer: a gift-suitable style can carry a higher retail price than the same bag sold as a personal purchase, but only for the weeks when people are shopping in that mode.

Four things that make a bag giftable

  • It does not look mass-produced. Handwork, visible texture and colour variation all read as 'chosen'. A perfectly uniform bag reads as convenient, which is the opposite of what a gift is supposed to signal.
  • It arrives presentable. A bag that needs wrapping is a chore; a bag that comes with a proper hangtag and a clean polybag or box is a gift already. This is a packing decision at the order stage, not something you can fix in store.
  • It is size-safe. Clothing is dangerous to give and accessories are not. A bag fits everyone, which is a large part of why bags are over-represented in gift buying at all.
  • It comes with a sentence. Whoever gives it will be asked about it. Hand crocheted, woven by hand, made in small runs — the giver needs something to say, and it should be true.

The formats that work hardest

Small pieces do disproportionate work in gifting. A mini crossbody, a phone pouch or a small handbag lands at a price people are comfortable giving to someone they are not extremely close to — the colleague, the host, the friend of a friend. Large statement bags are given inside families and between partners, and sell in far smaller numbers.

If you are building a gift assortment rather than a fashion one, weight it towards the smaller formats: something like the ethnic tassel mini handbag or the tulip knit mini crossbody bag sits in that band, while the rest of the crochet and knitted collection covers the larger pieces people buy for themselves.

What to settle with your supplier before the season

  1. Hangtag: printed or woven, your artwork or plain, attached at the factory or supplied loose.
  2. Individual packing: polybag, tissue, or a box — and whether the box ships flat to save freight.
  3. Care wording: gift recipients are the least likely people to know how to look after a woven or crocheted bag, and it costs nothing to print it on the tag.
  4. Colour split inside the minimum: gift ranges live or die on having the safe colours in depth, not on having every colour.
  5. Delivery date with a real buffer. Gift stock arriving two weeks late is not late stock, it is next year's stock.

Hangtags, labels and individual packing are all set per order at Lovy, and the minimum stays 100 pieces per style. Production is 15–30 days after sample approval — count backwards from the date the display has to be built, not from the date you want the boxes.

FAQ

Is there a minimum for custom hangtags and packing?

The bag minimum is 100 pieces per style, and tags and packing are quoted as line items against that order rather than carrying their own separate minimum in most cases. Tell us what you want with the inquiry and it is priced with the bags.

Should gift stock be a different style or the same one in different packing?

Usually the same styles, packed and merchandised differently. Running a separate gift SKU doubles your forecasting problem for a season that lasts a few weeks.

How far ahead should a gift range be ordered?

Work back from the display date: production is 15–30 days after sample approval, plus sampling, plus freight, plus a buffer for anything that goes wrong. For a December range that means starting conversations in late summer, not in October.
