Crochet vs Knitted Bags: What Wholesale Buyers Should Know

Short answer

Crochet is worked one stitch at a time with a hook, which makes a dense, firm fabric that holds a bag's shape. Knitting keeps many stitches open on needles and makes a softer, stretchier fabric that drapes. For a buyer that means crochet styles stand up on a shelf and knitted styles slouch — and it means the two are quoted on different handwork time, not on the same price list.

The construction difference in one paragraph

In crochet, each stitch is finished before the next one starts, using a single hook. In knitting, a whole row of stitches sits open on the needles at once. That mechanical difference is why crochet fabric is thicker and firmer, and why knitted fabric stretches and drapes more. Neither is better; they solve different problems.

On a bag, firmness is usually what you want in the body and softness is what you want in a slouchy shoulder style. That is why openwork totes and bucket bags are typically crocheted, while soft hobo and shoulder shapes are often knitted.

What changes for you as a buyer

  • Shape retention. A crocheted body keeps its outline when the bag is empty on a shelf. A knitted body needs a lining or an insert if you want it to stand up.
  • Weight. Denser crochet fabric usually means more yarn per bag. In our own catalogue the range across crochet and knitted styles runs from 60 to 740 grams per piece, and the heavier end is nearly always the denser stitch.
  • Handwork time. Both are handwork, but stitch density drives hours per bag. This is the real reason two similar-looking bags quote at different prices.
  • Openwork. The holes in an openwork bag are structural, not decorative cut-outs — which is why they cannot simply be closed up or made smaller without re-working the pattern.

Which one should you order?

Start from how the bag will be displayed and used, not from the technique name. If it has to sit on a table display and look full, choose a crocheted body or budget for a lining. If it is going to be worn over the shoulder and photographed on a model, a knitted body reads softer and more 'made by hand'. If you are buying for a summer capsule, most buyers take one of each and let the sell-through decide next season.

You can compare both in the crochet and knitted collection — for example the openwork hollow-out handmade woven tote against the softer hand-knitted flower shoulder bag.

Questions worth asking your supplier

  1. Is this style crocheted or knitted, and is the whole body one technique?
  2. What is the yarn composition, and is it the same yarn in every colorway?
  3. Is the bag lined, and if not, can a lining be added at this MOQ?
  4. What is the finished weight per piece — it drives your freight cost more than the size does.
  5. Can the same shape be made in the other technique if I prefer the look?

At Lovy both techniques come out of the same workshop, so a style can usually be quoted either way. Minimum is 100 pcs / style, production is 15–30 days after sample approval.

FAQ

Is a crochet bag stronger than a knitted bag?

Not automatically. Crochet fabric is denser and holds shape better, but strength in use comes from the handle attachment, the lining and the yarn — not from the stitch alone.

Can a factory copy a crochet design from a photo?

Usually yes, from a clear photo plus dimensions, but the counter sample is where the stitch pattern and density actually get matched. Approve the sample before bulk.

Do crochet bags have a higher MOQ than machine-made bags?

Not at Lovy — the minimum is 100 pieces per style either way. Handwork affects lead time and price rather than the minimum.
