Four Material Families

Cotton and cotton-poly yarn — the crochet and knit collection. Cotton yarn gives the softest hand and the most matte look; adding polyester makes the body hold its shape better and reduces stretch under load. Most of our knit styles are a cotton-poly blend for exactly that reason. On your shelf: a cotton-poly body keeps its outline when a customer lifts it off a table display, while pure cotton reads softer in the hand and in photographs. Neither is better — they merchandise differently.

Woven straw — PP (polypropylene) straw or paper-rope straw, never natural raffia. PP holds shape and colour and copes with damp beach use; paper rope is softer and closer to natural fibre in look, and much less happy when wet. Straw bodies are almost always combined with polyester or PU parts where the load sits. On your shelf: PP is what survives a season of damp beach use, which decides whether a resort range comes back at the end of summer. Paper rope is the pick for a city boutique where the bag stays dry and the artisanal look does the selling.

Cotton canvas — fashion styles and the blank/printed programs. Canvas is bought by weight in ounces per square yard, and weight decides stiffness far more than strength. On your shelf: weight is the first thing a customer feels. 8–10 oz folds flat and suits giveaways and retail packaging; 12 oz stands up on its own, which is why it is the retail middle.

Denim — a heavier cotton twill used where you want visible texture and a casual look; it takes print well and hides wear. On your shelf: denim wears in rather than out, which is the material to choose when the bag should look better after a year rather than newer.

Buyer Questions

Which material should I pick for a beach or resort range?

PP straw, with a lining and reinforced handles. It keeps its shape and colour through damp use, which is what fails first in that channel. Paper rope looks more artisanal and is the better choice for a city boutique range where the bag will not get soaked — the trade is honest and worth making deliberately rather than by accident.

How do I choose a canvas weight?

Work from how the bag has to behave, not from a number. 8–10 oz is light and folds small, which suits giveaways and retail packaging; 12 oz is the retail middle — it stands up on its own and still folds; 16 oz and heavier is stiff and structured, and starts to be uncomfortable on the shoulder unless the handle drop and width are designed for it. Our catalogue laminated option is 12 oz.

FAQ

Material FAQs

Anything else, ask us directly — we reply within 24 hours on business days.

Can you make the same style in a different material?

Often yes — a shape developed in cotton-poly yarn can usually be quoted in a different yarn, and a canvas body can be quoted in a different weight. Shape changes between families (straw to canvas, say) are a new development rather than a swap.

Do all bags have a lining?

No — it is set per style and per order. Where a style is unlined, the material line on its page says so. Adding a lining to an unlined style is a normal change at 100 pieces.

What is the difference between cotton yarn and cotton-poly yarn?

Pure cotton yarn is softer and more matte but stretches more under load; the polyester content adds recovery and shape retention. For a bag that will carry weight, the blend is usually the safer pick.

Can you match a fabric or colour I send you?

Send the swatch or the Pantone reference with your inquiry. We confirm what is achievable per material before sampling — dyed PP straw and yarn have different colour ranges.

Are these rattan, wicker, macrame or seagrass bags?

No, and the distinction is worth getting right before you write your own product copy. Rattan and wicker are rigid woven cane or willow — a different craft, closer to furniture than to a soft bag. Seagrass and natural raffia are plant fibres with their own supply seasons and a much narrower colour range; jute and sisal are coarser plant fibres, used mostly for sacks and shopper bases rather than for fashion bags. Macrame is knotted cord rather than crochet, so the fabric is made a different way even though the two look related in a photograph. Water hyacinth and corn husk are two more plant weaves you will see in the same search results — both are hand-braided from dried stalk or leaf, both are seasonal, and neither survives damp use the way a PP weave does. On the yarn side, acrylic yarn is the cheaper synthetic alternative to cotton: it holds bright colour and costs less, but it pills and it feels like plastic in the hand, so we do not use it. What we produce is PP (polypropylene) straw and paper-rope straw for the woven styles, and cotton or cotton-poly yarn worked by hand for the crochet and knitted ones. Describing one as the other is the fastest way to collect returns, so we would rather tell you plainly what it is.
