Canvas weight is ounces per square yard of fabric, and it decides stiffness more than strength. 8–10 oz is light and foldable and prints cleanly, which suits promotional and giveaway totes. 12 oz is the common retail middle: it stands up on its own and still folds. 16 oz and heavier is stiff, structured and heavy to ship.
What the number means
The ounce figure is the weight of one square yard of the fabric — not the weight of the finished bag. It tells you how thick and stiff the material is, how it drapes, and how well it holds shape under load. Two bags of the same size in 8 oz and 12 oz canvas look similar flat and behave completely differently on a shelf.
The three weights you will actually be offered
- 8–10 oz. Light, flexible, folds small. Good for giveaways, event totes and retail packaging. Not the choice for carrying heavy loads.
- 12 oz. The usual sweet spot for retail: strong enough for daily reuse, stands upright on its own, still comfortable to carry.
- 16–18 oz. Heavy and stiff, built for structure. Worth it for a premium structured tote, but consider handle width and drop, because a stiff heavy bag on a shoulder is uncomfortable.
Which weight prints best
For screen printing and DTG, cotton canvas in the 8–12 oz range is the most forgiving: the surface is even enough for clean edges, and the fabric is not so heavy that the ink sits on top of a rough weave. Heavier canvas prints fine but needs more attention to the artwork, particularly on thin lines and small text.
A laminated canvas is a different case again. The laminate gives a smooth surface that holds print sharply and wipes clean, which is why it turns up in food-market and retail programs. Our own catalogue includes a 12 oz laminated canvas base for exactly that use.
How to specify canvas so nothing is lost in translation
- State the weight in oz or gsm, and say which of the two you mean.
- Say whether you need 100% cotton or accept a cotton blend.
- Give the finished bag dimensions and the handle length and width.
- Say what the bag has to carry — this is what a factory actually uses to sanity-check your weight choice.
- Ask for the sample in the exact weight you plan to buy, not 'similar'.

FAQ
Is heavier canvas always better quality?+
No. Heavier is stiffer and more structured, which is a design decision. A 16 oz giveaway tote is an expensive way to ship weight nobody asked for.
What is the difference between oz and gsm?+
Both measure fabric weight per area — ounces per square yard versus grams per square metre. Ask your supplier to confirm in the unit you buy in, so nothing is converted twice.
Does canvas weight change the print price?+
Not usually by itself. Print price is driven by the number of colors, the print size and the number of placements.
