PP Straw vs Paper-Rope Straw Bags

Short answer

PP straw is a woven polypropylene tape: it holds its shape and color, shrugs off damp beach use, and is water-resistant rather than waterproof. Paper-rope straw is twisted paper yarn: softer, more matte, closer to natural fibre in look, and much less happy when it gets wet. Neither is natural raffia, and a supplier should tell you which one a style uses before you order.

Why this matters more than it sounds

Straw bags are photographed as a single category, but a beach store in a humid climate and a city boutique selling a summer accessory have different problems. Getting the material wrong shows up as returns in the first season, and 'straw' on a listing tells you almost nothing about which material you actually bought.

PP (polypropylene) straw

  • Woven from a synthetic tape, so color is consistent from roll to roll and between reorders.
  • Holds its woven shape well; a structured tote still looks structured after a season.
  • Water-resistant in normal use — light rain and damp sand are not a problem — but not waterproof, and a soaked bag still needs to be dried out.
  • Wipes clean with a damp cloth, which matters for beach and resort retail.

Paper-rope straw

  • Twisted paper yarn, woven the same way, with a softer and more matte surface.
  • Reads closer to natural fibre in photographs, which suits a boho or artisanal range.
  • Absorbs moisture — it is the wrong choice for a bag that will be carried in and out of the sea, and it should be kept out of the washing machine entirely.
  • Usually lighter in hand for the same shape, which helps a little on freight.

What we do not call it

Neither material is raffia, and calling them 'natural straw' on your own listing invites returns and marketplace complaints. If your customer specifically wants natural raffia, that is a different supply chain with different pricing and availability — say so up front rather than discovering it at inspection.

How to choose for your channel

  1. Beach, pool and resort: PP straw, with a lining and reinforced handles.
  2. City boutique summer capsule: either, chosen on the look you want in the window.
  3. Online marketplace with a broad audience: PP straw is the safer default, because you cannot control how the buyer treats it.
  4. Artisanal or natural-look brand story: paper rope, with clear care wording on the hangtag.

Every style in the straw collection carries its material line, and the straw type is confirmed per style at quotation. A structured example is the large-capacity straw tote; a smaller format is the mini straw crossbody phone pouch.

Lovy produces both PP straw and paper-rope straw, depending on the style. Ask for the version you want and we will quote it at 100 pcs / style.

FAQ

Is a PP straw bag plastic?

Polypropylene is a plastic, woven as a flat tape to look and behave like straw. That is exactly why it holds color and shape better than natural fibre in beach use.

Can paper-rope straw bags get wet?

They tolerate a shower, not a soaking. Paper yarn absorbs water and can lose stiffness, so keep them away from prolonged wet use and never machine wash them.

Which one is cheaper?

It depends on the shape and the weave density more than on the material itself. Ask for both quoted on the same style if the price difference decides your order.
